Out with the old, in with the new...

Canon called me yesterday, one day after I sent my camera back to their service center. They say my replacement camera is here and I could go collect.

I went today and to my pleasant surprise, they gave me a new model! The Digital IXUS i Zoom. I mean, I am really happy with my IXUS v3 already and now I am getting a completely new model, at no cost! The IXUS v3 was a 3.2 megapixel with 2.0x optical zoom. This IXUS i Zoom is a 5.0 megapixel (!!) with 2.4x optical zoom. It has the same Digic II processor but with a more advance menu function. One feature I particularly appreciate is the Timezone. When I travel next time, I could just change my "Fly To" (as opposed to Home) timezone and pictures taken in the destination will record the correct time and date. It has the same old solid feel of an IXUS.

In addition, I can now take video up to 60 minutes or 1GB in size, whichever come first. Video could be capture at 20 fps. The old camera could only capture 5 minutes of video. This is a huge improvements.

I checked Froogle and this camera cost around USD$379 - US$399. That means the camera would cost RM1,500 in Malaysia. That's the same price I paid for the IXUS v3. I could not imagine Canon giving me something at the same price. I am simply speechless.

I have one gripe to this whole event. I recently bought a new battery for the v3 to take more photos during sister's wedding. The old battery is just too weak - it could hardly last an hour of continuous indoor shooting.. This new battery barely 2 months old and now I can't use it anymore. The new camera has a completely different battery design. On top of that, my compact flash 128mb and 512mb memory card is rendered useless. This camera is relatively smaller than the v3, so it uses MMC memory card. That means, I have to get a memory and possibly a set of battery in regards to this exchange.

At any rate, Canon, you have one very satisfied customer and I'll be sure to tell everyone I know about this!

  2. I gave my 2 months old new battery to Aunt S. She's using a IXUS V2 and coincidently, she's visiting KL at this moment. So, it's not a waste of money. At least someone is using the battery. Still, it was very kik sim for me.
