Quick Scrap Note

I use Apple Notes as my main note-taking app.

While Apple Notes has Quick Note, every word I jot down there is automatically saved into Apple Notes. This ends up piling a lot of junk notes that I have to manually clean up at the end of the day. I often find myself jotting down quick, temporary things—like a phone number, a serial number, or a quick calculation. These are scrap notes that I don’t really care to keep permanently inside Apple Notes.

That’s the purpose of this app.

It is plain text only. No frills. It's quick to launch (set a global hotkey in Settings. I prefer to use ⌃ Space). With the hotkey it's fast to show the app window, typed something, and hide it.

Oh, I can choose to save it into Apple Notes (via shortcuts) and it's like a fast and simple front end to Apple Notes.

Keyboard Shortcuts

⌘ N create new page
⌘ E clear the current page
⌘ D delete page

⌘ - smaller font
⌘ = bigger font

⌘ 1,2,3..,9,0 jump directly to the page number
(Click on the Page x of x at the bottom bar and type the page number to jump to)

Navigation (configurable)
⌘ ← previous page
⌘ → next page
⌘ ↑ jump to the first page
⌘ ↓ jump to the last page

[The two saves below is done via Apple Shortcut. The shortcuts are included in Settings]

⌘ S save into Apple Notes
⌘ R save into Apple Reminders [via Shortcut link too]
(Power Users have 5 additional slots to saves into other apps)

⌘ , open settings (or click the menu Scrap Note > Settings...)

You can do quick calculation by typing an equation followed by == (This is powered by SoulverCore, so you could do unit conversion too).

Oh, and it's Free to use. Enjoy!

In V1.5, I included URL Scheme. This means that if you’re a Popclip user, you can now send text directly to ScrapNote. You just need to highlight the text below starting from # popclip to the end the url: line. Popclip will pop up and prompt you to install the snippet. There are 2 snippets which you can install:

1) send text to ScrapNote as new note

# popclip
name: Send to ScrapNote
icon: iconify:solar:paperclip-line-duotone
url: scrapnote://add?text=***

2) append text to current Scrap Note

# popclip
name: Append to ScrapNote
icon: iconify:fluent-emoji-flat:linked-paperclips
url: scrapnote://add?text=***&mode=append

For those who are adventurous, you can edit the Apple Shortcut to save into another app, for example, CotEditor. Please make sure to keep the same Shortcut Name: ScrapNoteToNotes
Here is an example of how the Shortcut looks:

Here, I attached the Shortcut for the ScrapNoteToReminders (new in V1.5), for your reference:

I have built 3 shortcuts. Please feel free to download them and use:

[New] Hide Dock icon!
[New] If you copy from Word or Excel (or Numbers) and paste into Scrap Note, it will remove formatting and paste as plain text.
[New] Right click on menu bar icon to get a drop down menu with Settings and Quit.
[Fixed] Pasting from Word and Excel will not crash the app anymore.

V1.5:
[New] Added URL Scheme. What this means is that if you are a Popclip user, you can send text to ScrapNote. Please see my website for the Popclip snippet
[New] There is a checkbox in Settings for you to auto launch the app when you restart your Mac.
[New] I added a new shortcut to save text into Reminders. One reminder for each line. Please install the shortcut from Settings.
[New] Mac will do spell check as you type. I miss that wriggle red lines.
[New] A clock button to insert current timestamp to the note in this format: Monday, 26 May 2025, 9:07 PM
[Fixed] Ask for confirmation when clearing text or deleting page.
[Fixed] If you have really long notes (which you should not, because this app is for short sentences, but I know... habits. Anyway, previously, the shortcut will truncate long notes before it is saved into Apple Notes. I have changed the shortcut to copy text from Clipboard instead and this by-pass the character limit. So, please download the new 'Save to Notes' shortcut from Settings.

V1.4:
[Fixed] A pesky bug was intercepting keyboard shortcuts, which sometimes prevented you from creating a new page, deleting a page, or changing the font size. This has finally been fixed (hopefully), and it warranted an emergency update to V1.4.
[New] Keyboard shortcuts have been added to navigate between pages. Use ⌘ + Left Arrow and ⌘ + Right Arrow to go to the previous and next page, respectively. Hope this helps you work faster!

V1.3:
[New] Updated marketing screenshot.
[Fixed] Made the app icon smaller so it looks nicer in the Dock. I want to provide an option to hide the Dock icon, but this is more complicated than expected. It might break the menu (and with it, your keyboard shortcuts), so I’ll need more time to test this properly. I’m currently between project - thanks for your patience!
[Fixed] The “New Page” toolbar icon was not showing in Sonoma and earlier macOS versions.
[Fixed] Undo/Redo, ⌘z, was not working - this has been resolved.
[Fixed] When your current page is yellow and you add a new page, the new page was also yellow. I’ve changed this so new pages default to white instead.

V1.2:
[Fixed] New user starts with Page 1 of 0
[Fixed] New user toolbar is hidden. Toolbar should always show for new user

V1.1:
[New] Colors
[New] Multiple pages
[Fixed] When the app launch, it will always show the text edit window

V1.0:
New launch!
